Chapter 32 in Research Handbook on Sport and COVID-19, 2022, pp 400-414 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Global negativities resulting from the cancellation or postponement of national and international sporting events due to the COVID-19 pandemic have affected sports lovers, fans, and all sectors of the sports industry. Depending on these effects, while the options regarding sports betting differ necessarily, the psychological processes experienced by individuals, betting preferences/behaviors, and expectations also varied in parallel. This chapter evaluates the changes and effects of the sports betting processes during the COVID-19 period on a sectoral and individual level with the help of the literature review. In conclusion, in the light of previous research, it has been determined that COVID-19 has various economic, social, and psychological effects on both the sports betting industry and sports bettors, and these effects vary according to the periods of the pandemic, the country where they live and the level of problem gambling.
