The impact of COVID-19 on the management of the sport media

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic led to - and has continued to perpetuate - the temporary (and sometimes permanent) closure of sports clubs, events, leagues, activities, and businesses. These changes have had different effects on the functions of the mass media in relation to informing, creating, influencing, entertaining, and reinforcing. The mass media were active in seeking news about the interrelationship between sport and the pandemic. The work by the mass media included disseminating information on changes to the sporting calendar. The closure of sports activities reduced the creating function of mass media and forced media outlets to use their archives and broadcast previous stories to their audiences. Sport media also focused on the direct health, social, and organizational impacts of COVID-19 on sport, such as debates on the future resumption of sporting events. Sport media content concentrated on reinforcing function to help control the effects of the pandemic. Sport media experiences during the pandemic have led managers to pay more attention to functional alternatives to maintain effectiveness
