Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Transport and COVID-19, 2025, pp 219-232 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter draws on a special session at WCTR16 (2023) on the impact of COVID-19 on rail transport and a webinar on the same topic in the previous year. It reviews global developments in rail transport since 2020, with a particular focus on Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. Trends in rail passenger and freight demand and supply are assessed, along with assessments of the impacts of COVID-19 on the economics of the rail transport industry. Different research approaches are reviewed, including both qualitative approaches, such as scenario analysis and the development of personas, and quantitative approaches such as econometric methods, structural equation modelling and machine learning. Results from both primary and secondary data are considered. The strengths and weaknesses of railways in the face of pandemics are assessed, along with assessments of the opportunities and threats presented by COVID-19.
