Chapter 15 in Research Handbook on Transport and COVID-19, 2025, pp 309-324 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The global repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted airport operations worldwide, including those in Poland. These disruptions had profound effects on the financial performance of airports, prompting alterations in key financial metrics utilized to gauge operational profitability. This chapter aims to elucidate the impact of the pandemic on 12 Polish airports by analyzing pertinent financial indicators. Through a comprehensive examination of financial data spanning from 2016 to 2022 and employing a fixed effects model, we conducted a comparative assessment to discern both the sources of divergence and the magnitude of the pandemic's adverse effects on airport operations. Our findings underscore the varying degrees of impact experienced by individual airports in response to the pandemic. Moreover, notable disparities emerged in the operational performance, liquidity, and debt levels among Polish airports, highlighting the nuanced nature of their financial standing.
