Chapter 24 in Research Handbook on Transport and COVID-19, 2025, pp 491-506 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the entire transport sector, hindering its full recovery and leaving lasting consequences. This challenge is compounded by other global crises, including geopolitical tensions, regional conflicts, climate change, and natural disasters, further complicating efforts for recovery and future transportation development. In this concluding chapter, we explore the interconnected dynamics of these crises and their collective effects on economic development and employment. We analyze how these impacts spread throughout the transport sector, considering the progress of artificial intelligence and the diverse development stages of different countries. Moreover, we discuss essential policy responses aimed at alleviating these impacts on transportation, with a focus on critical areas in transport policymaking. Lastly, the chapter presents a transformative vision for the transport sector, outlining a roadmap towards advancing global development for a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future.
