Chapter 16 in Research Handbook on the Governance of Projects, 2023, pp 184-194 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces morals and ethics and a tool to help decision-making when facing ethical issues in projects. A variety of ethical issues in projects and their relation to different project governance approaches are discussed. These approaches are distinguished along the lines of the four different project governance paradigms presented in Chapter 27. Different paradigms give rise to different types and frequencies of ethical issues occurring in projects and different levels of trust among the participating parties. The role of trust, the costs of mistrust, and their relation with governance are discussed from an ethics perspective. Types of ethical issues are presented with an assessment tool for organizations to identify the most likely ethical issues in their particular setting. The chapter finishes with a discussion of the role of corporate governance and the interaction between corporate governance and project governance in the emergence of ethical issues in projects.
