Governance of projects and project governance: enabling strategy implementation through projects

Ata Ul Musawir

Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on the Governance of Projects, 2023, pp 91-102 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A focused and successful organization is one where all decisions are made in adherence to a clear and effective strategy. Since projects are increasingly being used as the primary means through which organizations enact change and implement strategy, ensuring a clear link between the strategic objectives and the projects being undertaken is essential for the long-term success of an organization. Governance of projects, which refers to the collective governance of all projects within an organization, and project governance, which refers to the governance of individual projects, collectively serve to create this link by acting as a two-tiered interface between corporate governance and projects. This chapter discusses the key guidelines in the literature for enabling strategy implementation through projects at each of the hierarchical interfaces between corporate governance, governance of projects, project governance, and project management. Subsequently, some directions for future research are identified.
