Where Trotsky's horizons stop, Gramscis begin: the passive revolutionary road to capitalist modernity

Abstract: The argument made here is that the concept of passive revolution offers a mode of theorizing both the inner class-driven dynamics of capitalist modernity across spatio-temporal state forms and how these processes of developmental catch-up are related to the geopolitical pressures of the states-system. The horizons of Trotsky and Gramsci are therefore dynamically linked in working through the spatio-temporal specificity of passive revolution in connection to the generalizability of unevenness and combination. In conclusion, a set of methodological reflections are offered on incorporated comparison, distinguishing between critical purchase and effective description, in defining new rounds of passive revolution studies outside of the pursuit of falsificationism and the universal pretensions to science transcending historical eras.
