Hegemonic struggle and right-wing populism
Owen Worth
Chapter 22 in The Elgar Companion to Antonio Gramsci, 2024, pp 388-405 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter traces the shifting ideological discourses and practices in the neoliberal era, focusing on morbid symptoms in the organic crisis of neoliberalism, and particularly contemporary authoritarian populist/neonationalist currents and their complex articulations with the contemporary form of neoliberalism. In particular, it will look at how the rise of right-wing movements have emerged to contest the form and nature of how neoliberal capitalism has been articulated. It will both look at Gramsci’s own work on fascism and Caesarism in his lifetime and then examine how a succession of crises in the era of neoliberalism have seen the emergence of right-wing movements in what we can define as the Global ‘North’. It will suggest that these have looked to engage in a ‘war of position’ in order to shape future class dynamics and social relations.
