The historical bloc as a strategic node in Gramscis Prison Notebooks

Panagiotis Sotiris

Chapter 7 in The Elgar Companion to Antonio Gramsci, 2024, pp 118-135 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The historical bloc is a central notion within the conceptual framework of Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks. The aim of this chapter is to suggest that the historical bloc is not a descriptive or simply analytical notion, but rather a strategic one, pointing to the particular articulation between theory and strategy in the Notebooks. Consequently, a politics aiming at the formation of a subaltern historical bloc does not refer simply to social alliances, but rather to the combination between an alliance of the subaltern classes and social groups, with a political programme that aims at profound transformation and the political and organizational forms that can liberate such an antagonistic historical dynamic.
