Chapter 12 in Central Banks and Supervisory Architecture in Europe, 2022, pp 135-155 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the EU's and euro area's financial history over the last 15 years, thus spanning three main crises: the Financial Turmoil (FT) in 2007 and subsequent Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in 2008-9, the euro area sovereign debt crisis (SDC) in 2010-12 and the ongoing Coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis that started in early in 2020. Each crisis had distinct origins as well as economic, financial and social impacts. All three crises have been accompanied by important reforms of the EU's governance and financial architecture.
