Gendered violence and health in ‘translocational’ perspective: Brazilian womens experiences in Rio de Janeiro and London

Abstract: This chapter examines how the gender-health nexus needs to recognise gendered violence as a key determinant of women’s well-being. It suggests that it also needs to consider how women self-define and respond to their health in relation to gendered violence. This can be achieved through a translocational perspective which incorporates the politics of feminist struggle across borders to show how gendered violence intersects with deep-seated global health inequalities in ways that do not homogenise places and people. It also foregrounds women’s voices and narratives ensuring that they are portrayed as protagonists rather than victims. It also encompasses a multidisciplinary approach that stretches across traditional health and social sciences to incorporate creative engagements to foster therapeutic engagements with women that can improve their well-being. We suggest that such an approach forms the basis for a future research agenda on gender and global health in relation to gendered violence.
