The transformative power of zakat (alms) in a humanitarian crisis: a case study from Kenya

Abstract: Zakat is a compulsory religious obligation and it has socio-economic benefits to the whole society. Due to cost incurred in funding, it is difficult to give free assistance to help who are in need. Not only this, but even giving interest-free loans are also impossible due to this. However, money received as zakat can be given to those who deserve it without expecting a return and since zakat is a yearly recurrent obligation, effective zakat distribution has the potential to alleviate global poverty as one of the legal recipient categories is needy and poor. This chapter discusses the transformative power of zakat in humanitarian crisis by transporting zakat from one country to another using a case study from Kenya. It is anticipated that the findings of this chapter will assist to understand the importance of effectively distribute zakat to assist alleviating global poverty level.
