Digitalisation and sustainable supply chain management: past development and future significance

Pietro Evangelista, Jukka Hallikas and Mohamad Y. Jaber

Chapter 1 in Environmentally Responsible Supply Chains in an Era of Digital Transformation, 2024, pp 1-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Adopting digital technologies in business environments today to support sustainability efforts and actions is critical for achieving resiliency and competitiveness in supply chains. Despite the topic gaining increasing interest in academia and industry, there is not enough knowledge about it in the literature. This chapter aims to fill this gap. Its objective is to systematically review the literature concerning digital technologies in sustainable supply chains. The systematic literature review resulted in 63 articles published between 2014 and 2020. It used a classification framework based on two dimensions: digital technologies and sustainability approaches. The results indicate that, from the sustainability perspective, the social pillar has received little attention. From the digitalisation point of view, artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT) have been little researched. In addition, the results showed that sharing information among players in supply chains and performance measurement are topics not well studied in the literature.
