Abstract:
Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and digital technologies have been mainly applied to manufacturing. However, the application of such technologies can also improve sustainability in reverse flows. The chapter investigates the nexus between digital technologies and sustainability in supply chains to propose a novel use of some of these technologies to help reduce the environmental impact of municipal solid waste (MSW). The focus is on handling household waste and recyclables. This chapter reviews recent contributions in using digital technologies (e.g. the internet of things, cyber-physical systems and big data, to name a few) to improve the efficiency of waste management operations while reducing emissions. These technologies will lead to efficient management of MSW, reducing environmental impact, setting targets to reduce household waste and achieving savings due to the segregation of different types of waste at the source. The chapter concludes with managerial implications and future research recommendations.
