Nation-states and shipping policy-making

.

Chapter 10 in Globalisation, Policy and Shipping, 2022, pp 232-242 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter analyses the relationship between nation-states and shipping policy-making following the earlier chapters that have discussed these issues within the EU and in the context of globalisation. National policy-making in its broadest sense is discussed including issues such as the effect of globalisation and hollowing out, neo-liberalism, neo-corporatism and neo-statism using the example of state-aids and in particular tonnage taxation. The necessity for a national shipping policy is also analysed in the context of intensified globalisation. Fifteen key shipping policy lessons are discussed in some detail.
