.

Chapter 5 in Globalisation, Policy and Shipping, 2022, pp 46-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides a spatial interpretation of shipping policies - international/global, supranational, national, regional, local and the factors that are influential in affecting the characteristics of shipping policies - historical trends; networks, nodes and systems; modal choice, inter-modalism and flexibility; deregulation and privatisation; and holism. The chapter ends with a discussion of the contexts for the shipping industry - economic, legal, managerial, organisational, political, social, spatial, technical.
