The impact of globalisation on the European Union shipping industry

.

Chapter 7 in Globalisation, Policy and Shipping, 2022, pp 108-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter focusses upon the relationship between the EU shipping industry and globalisation with particular reference to the late 20th and early 21st century up to the current day. It analyses the contribution of the shipping industry to the EU economy and then goes on to look at the transition of policy in the light of globalisation trends. Issues considered are the decline of EU seafarers, the role of international registers, the internationalisation of the shipping industry including the rise of non-EU seafarers and the application of state aids to shipping. A discussion about the intensity of the global shipping environment and its impact upon EU shipping follows including issues such as privatisation, capital mobility, inter-modalism, IT, labour mobility and technical conformity. It concludes with consideration of state-aids for shipping and the need for national shipping policies.
