Case study research in counselling and psychotherapy
David Edwards
Chapter 14 in Handbook of Case Study Research in the Social Sciences, 2024, pp 248-271 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter examines how, as an idiographic method, case study research makes an essential contribution to the development of applied clinical knowledge in the field of psychotherapy. Case studies contribute to all stages of knowledge development including the testing of conclusions. Several classic studies from the literature are summarized and the resurgence of appreciation of case studies is noted, including academic journals devoted to publishing them. Suggestions are made for structuring clinical case studies. Steps for enhancing quality assurance and the trustworthiness of conclusions are examined, as well as procedures to address ethical concerns particularly with respect to the privacy of those whose material is used.
