Abstract:
A brief historical overview of the initial idea and need for national parks and the genesis of the formation of the National Park Service is presented in this chapter. National parks are emphasized as a unit within the National Park Service. The first formal mention of the need for awareness of the overcrowding of the national parks is documented as occurring in 1933.
