Chapter 12 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 85-91 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The emergence of various and diverse data, the complexity of services along with the principles of Open Science have influenced the methods and tools for managing and making research data available. They also influenced the disposal environments (i.e., Repositories and/or Research Infrastructures) and introduced the concepts of trust and FAIR, an acronym with connotations of the adjective fair and the concept of fairness and justice. The free, fast, mass production and circulation of data impose rules and techniques that promote within Open Science, more reliable data and services at least in terms of technical excellence rendering FAIR data a sine qua non precondition. We will explore, through a brief historical review, these developments, limitations, and future challenges that the adoption of fair data in social science may bring about.
