Chapter 14 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 99-105 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Focused ethnography is a distinctive and efficient pragmatic variant of traditional ethnographic inquiry. By centring on a specific phenomenon, the approach entails concise yet intensive fieldwork. This entry extends the conceptual boundaries of focused ethnography while critically assessing its suitability across diverse social research contexts. Emphasising both its merits and limitations, the entry dissects the nuanced advantages and disadvantages inherent in the application of focused ethnography. This seeks to enrich the discourse surrounding this methodological innovation, fostering a deeper comprehension of its potential contributions to qualitative research.
