Qualitative interviewing

Kathryn Roulston

Chapter 32 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 228-236 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Qualitative interviews are a primary method used by qualitative researchers across disciplines to elicit research participants’ descriptions of their lived experiences, perspectives, and beliefs. This entry begins by examining common types of interviews used by researchers and the modalities used to conduct them. Conducting qualitative interview studies entails a pre-interview planning phase, the conduct of interviews, and a post-interview phase in which data are transcribed, analyzed, and represented in research reports. Crucial steps in relation to each of the three phases are discussed, along with variations in elicitation methods, challenges that can occur, and what issues might be considered in relation to assessing the quality of interview studies.
