Chapter 45 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 320-328 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Surveys are commonly conducted in social science research. This entry discusses what a survey is, the modes of survey administration, and the main steps of survey research. Designing a survey involves decisions about many aspects, including survey administration, instrument development, sampling, response rate, and interviewers. Important considerations and guidelines for designing a survey are presented. Sources of error that can limit the accuracy of inferences about populations and strategies to minimize errors are discussed. Survey researchers often conduct structured interviews; therefore, the main issues in the interview process and interviewer recruitment and training are reviewed. Aspects of post-survey adjustments are briefly mentioned.
