Chapter 46 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 329-335 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter we analyse the history of the use of audiovisual media in social research in three senses: 1) as finished products; 2) as research tools; and 3) as cultural elements of study. Based on a critical analysis of audiovisual media, we focus on their potential as instruments that facilitate social participation. The text is structured in three sections. First, we deal with photography and reflect on its contribution to anthropological work. Secondly, we look at moving images with sound, focusing on some of the works that have laid the foundations of visual anthropology. And finally, we review how digital ethnography has become a privileged space for communication and the generation of sociocultural identities, with the development of digital social networks.
