Initial Coin Offerings research
.
Chapter 7 in Understanding Initial Coin Offerings, 2024, pp 158-175 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of the current academic knowledge about Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), emphasizing the contrast between anecdotal industry literature and empirical scientific literature. It highlights the historical delay in academic research on ICOs due to the time-consuming nature of rigorous economic analysis and the recent focus on crowdfunding. As of 2023, ICOs remain less explored academically compared to crowdfunding and venture capital, despite attention in industry literature. The chapter reviews several comprehensive academic studies, exploring ICO success determinants, long-term performance, and implications for various stakeholders. The key research themes include legal aspects, particularly within the U.S. and European contexts, and success metrics, often compared with IPOs and crowdfunding. The chapter explores tokenomics, market performance, and the role of ICO intermediaries, before concluding with areas requiring further research.
