Chapter 1 in SMEs in the Digital Era, 2023, pp 24-44 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The introduction of the Digital Single Market endows SMEs with the opportunity to widen their scope of action as well as with the necessity to rethink their business model in an integrated way. Relationships with clients and suppliers, interplay with digital platforms, innovation patterns and people management need to be revised jointly to be able to compete in an unprecedented market. Nevertheless, SMEs have often struggled to embrace new organizational models and operations. This contribution fleshes out opportunities and criticalities due to the digital single market for European SMEs, how business models can be elaborated to maximize chances of success, and what changes in organizational models can be implemented to thrive in the digital market.
