Chapter 21 in Handbook of Accounting in Society, 2024, pp 294-309 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores how accountability is demanded by residents and activists in the English social housing space. We focus on residents and activists demands for accountability in relation to service charges in social housing. We adopt a contextually situated understanding of accountability which views it as contested and nested at the nexus between public accountability and neoliberalism and involving a dynamic interplay between power and resistance. Taking this approach enables us to shed light on the ‘doing’ of demanding accountability from the bottom.
