China’s eco dreams and green reality
Austin Williams
Chapter 2 in Handbook on China’s Urban Environmental Governance, 2023, pp 26-40 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the environmental ambitions and restraints; the myth and the reality of China’s urban expansion, focusing on the socio-political discourse within China and the broader geo-political context. This is a wide brief and so there are general points of principle drawn across the chapter rather than a narrow forensic assessment. It explores some of the hype in the West as well as the hyperbole in China with the intention of introducing a rational critique into a heavily political contemporary topic. It examines the general motivational trends within the political discourse, interrogates a number of case study examples, as well as assessing the consequences for China’s environmental aims and methods.
