The determinants of enterprise digital capabilities in Sierra Leone

Abstract: Digitalisation provides many business opportunities and changes how firms secure competitiveness and improve their performance. As digitalisation is becoming a strategic imperative, firms from developing countries have started integrating digital technologies, tools, and platforms into their strategies and operations. Despite its role in efficiency, value creation, and firm growth, few studies have explored the determinants of firms’ digital capabilities in developing countries. As a result, this chapter addresses this concern by investigating how firm-level factors interact with country-level factors to drive the digital capabilities of firms. Based on an empirical analysis of 511 firms from Sierra Leone, this study demonstrates that firm resources, international exposure, and institutional quality are critical determinants of digital capabilities.
