Chapter 11 in Building Digital Technological Capabilities, 2025, pp 302-327 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) has revolutionised how businesses operate and make decisions. DT has led to new business models and improved operational performance in manufacturing. Companies need a clear digital strategy focused on data-driven decision-making and system integration to succeed in the global industrial landscape. However, many companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), struggle to achieve their digitalisation goals. This research aims to contribute to the digital transformation of SMEs by proposing a data-driven approach, analysing the resulting digital technological capability improvements, and evaluating its impacts on a medium-sized manufacturing industry. The study found that DT can improve lead time, planned execution rate, productivity, and revenue. It also found that the lack of infrastructure, understanding of technology, and intangibility of benefits are some challenges that SMEs face in implementing DT. By providing these insights, this research underscores the importance of a clear strategy in the digital transformation process, guiding SMEs and instilling confidence to overcome the challenges and significantly improve operational performance.
