The crisis of democracy in the age of cities and complexity
Juval Portugali
Chapter 1 in The Crisis of Democracy in the Age of Cities, 2023, pp 2-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The discussion in this chapter evolves in three steps: first, it introduces the two notions that form the title of this book: “the crisis of democracy” and “the age of cities.” Second, it adds to the latter two a third notion - complexity, which is, on the one hand, a view about the essence of social life in the 21st century, while on the other, a formal theory about systems in general, including cities and democracy. Thirdly, the chapter examines the present crisis of democracy from the conjunctive perspective of “the age of cities and complexity.”
