Chapter Chapter 22 in Research Handbook on Partnering across the Life Course, 2025, pp 265-277 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Many relationship scholars interested in understanding relationship development and deterioration assess partners’ evaluation of the quality of their relationship. This emphasis has resulted in a comprehensive understanding of the longitudinal course of relationship quality over time, and the correlates and consequences of change (and stability) in relationship quality. In this chapter, we summarize several diverse bodies of literature on the topic of relationship quality, with a focus on factors (e.g., individual factors, relationship processes, external context) associated with relationship quality. We also consider consequences of relationship quality for individuals, the relationship, and others. Although we distinguish among predictors, correlates, and consequences, there are likely bidirectional associations of many of the factors with relationship quality. Then, we turn to a discussion of interventions and policies that may help couples maintain high quality relationships. We end the chapter with suggestions for future research on relationship quality.
