Social stratification and partnerships

Diederik Boertien

Chapter Chapter 23 in Research Handbook on Partnering across the Life Course, 2025, pp 279-290 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses how social stratification shapes the partner choices individuals make by answering questions like: Why do we not have the same chances of finding a wealthy partner? Why are certain people more likely to separate? In the first part of the chapter, we look at the socioeconomic correlates of partner trajectories and how people often choose partners who are similar to themselves. In the second part of the chapter, we flip things around and aim to understand how partner choices affect social stratification. How does partnering matter for our socioeconomic status and well-being? Does partnering behavior contribute to economic inequality? The chapter focuses primarily on the socioeconomic stratification of partnering in high-income countries. After giving an overview of existing research on these different topics, avenues for future research are discussed, including how to connect this body of research to other inequalities in society.
