Ag-gag laws

Caitlin M. Foley

Chapter 1 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 1-3 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Ag-gag laws target the speech of individuals who perform undercover investigations into the conditions of facilities that raise animals for food. Many investigations are employment-based; namely, an investigator will go undercover to work at an agricultural facility without revealing their affiliation to an animal protection organization or goal. The investigator will perform the normal job requirements while observing and potentially capturing instances of animal cruelty through videos, photos, or audio. Legal challenges have successfully curbed many ag-gag laws, yet some governments remain poised to continue their passage.
