Service animals in the US

Chapter 100 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 381-384 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
People with disabilities collaborate with a variety of service animals in both private or public settings. If an individual is a ‘qualified’ person with a disability and their animal partner is a service animal (also known as an assistance dog or assistance animal), certain rights and responsibilities may apply. The Americans with Disabilities Act is the primary US federal law addressing service animals in employment, government facilities, and places of public accommodation. Generally, these entities must provide reasonable accommodation for service animals unless it will result in undue hardship, fundamental alteration or direct threat.
