Chapter 114 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 432-436 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The field of wildlife management encompasses maintaining healthy wildlife populations, restoring depleted populations, and managing interactions between humans, wildlife, and habitats to achieve stakeholder objectives. In addition to conventional concepts, the interrelationship between wildlife management and conservation is emphasized, with the ultimate goal of wildlife conservation. Legislative practices and value objectives vary across countries, shaped by complex factors. Generally, wildlife management techniques aim to study, manipulate, and assess wildlife populations while considering ecosystem integrity. Stakeholders involved in wildlife management encompass diverse interests, such as recreational, cultural, social, political, economic, and health aspects. The field continues to evolve, incorporating values like wildlife welfare, One Health, and addressing contemporary challenges like zoonotic diseases and climate change.
