Wildlife trapping

Tara Zuardo

Chapter 115 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 437-441 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Every year in the US, more than six million animals are trapped in the wild for their fur, primarily using body-gripping steel-jaw leghold traps, steel-jaw leghold traps, and strangling neck snares. The US continues to be among the world's leaders in terms of the number of animals trapped each year. However, trapping in the US is predominantly regulated at the state level, and few US states require trappers to report the number of non-target animals caught and killed. As a result, we do not have accurate estimates of just how widespread the impact of trapping is on both target wildlife and other impacted animals. We only know that millions continue to be killed, maimed, and made to suffer for a number of reasons, including for sport, the fur trade, and for the purpose of conducting wildlife ‘damage control’.
