Chapter 116 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 442-445 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
A working equid is an animal from the family Equidae (horse) who is used by humans to perform labour, as differentiated from animals kept for production, leisure, sports or as pets. Working equids are mostly used in low- and middle-income countries in a variety of ways, including to plough fields, to carry water for crops and other animals, equipment, and feed, providing manure, and transporting goods and people. Working equids face a number of welfare challenges due to the nature of their work, which can result in both physical and psychological suffering. National laws often lack specific legislation that protects working equids. At the international level, working equids are included in the WOAH Terrestrial Animal Health Code. In recent years, the global trade in donkey skins has increased, decimating donkey populations. Equid protection organizations advocate for greater recognition of the vital role working equids play and for their legal protection as sentient beings.
