World Trade Organization

Carolina Maciel

Chapter 118 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 449-452 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental body that provides a legal framework for international trade by administering trade agreements and resolving disputes related to their implementation. This entry offers an overview of the intersection between WTO rules and animal welfare measures adopted by member countries. It reviews three key cases—US Shrimp, US Tuna II, and EC Seal Products—to illustrate how animal welfare measures can be perceived as conflicting with WTO legal provisions, as well as the defences used, and outcomes achieved.
