Zoos and aquariums

Wendy Bulger and James F. Gesualdi

Chapter 119 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 453-456 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The legal landscape surrounding zoos and aquariums worldwide covers evolving domestic laws governing areas such as animal care, welfare, acquisition, transportation, special protective measures, and comparative/regional and international law. Increasing concerns relating to biosecurity, habitat loss, and evolving public perception are impacting zoos and aquariums. While zoos and aquariums continue to change with a heightened focus on animal well-being and conservation, new laws and elevated public consciousness may determine the future existence of those lacking accreditation and/or certification.
