Aquacultural law
Amy P. Wilson
Chapter 16 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 59-62 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
For decades, aquaculture has been the world's fastest-growing food production system and has recently overtaken wild capture fisheries in terms of food production. Various forms and types of aquaculture exist, including onshore (or inland) and offshore, in different water environments (fresh, brackish or salt water (mariculture)), as well as in diverse systems, all with distinct consequences. This entry will provide a limited, high-level overview of the aquaculture industry and its regulation from an animal-centric perspective, with a focus on one Global South jurisdiction, South Africa, and one Global North jurisdiction, the United States of America. It will provide statistical data relating to the scope of the industry, highlight animal, environmental, public health, and consumer-related issues, and selected examples of existing and emerging governance.
