Aquatic animals

Chapter 17 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 63-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Aquatic animals are not well known. People, including legislators and policy makers, do not know who they are or what their needs and capacities are. Nonetheless, freshwater and marine aquatic animals are present across the globe. They are used in a myriad of ways, including for food, science, entertainment, medicine, jewellery, industrial purposes, as companions, and more. Scientists are increasingly studying these animals and sharing evidence of their intelligence, sentience, and capacity to feel physiological, psychological, and emotional pain and to suffer as a result of human actions. This information highlights the lack of legal protections for aquatic animals and the need to improve and increase regulation to avoid neglect and abuse across multiple domains.
