Artificial Intelligence and animal law
Jamie McLaughlin
Chapter 18 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 68-71 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence [AI] regulation is an emerging legal topic. Individual countries and supranational alliances have proposed various AI technology laws. The EU Artificial Intelligence Act reached provisional agreement in 2023 and, if enacted will be the broadest AI regulatory framework. Proposed AI regulations are human-centric, aiming to promote human wellbeing. Animal needs are not explicitly considered. Regardless, there is a growing body of ethical, scientific, and legal work focused on incorporating animal needs into AI design and regulation.
