Compassionate conservation – a legal perspective in the EU
Elien Verniers
Chapter 25 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 95-98 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
For the last decade, compassionate conservationism has been booming. From a legal perspective, however, little has been written on this topic. Taking a practical approach, this entry will delve deeper into the EU's animal welfare and species protection legislation and will examine how integration can possibly be achieved. In particular, the EU's Nature Directives and Invasive Alien Species Regulation are scrutinized. Remarkably, the European Court of Justice plays a key role in building bridges between ‘compassionate’ and ‘conservation’ and thus in enabling a legal transition of compassionate conservation in the EU. Much work remains to incorporate, legally, a compassionate approach to conservation.
