Conservation and wildlife protection conventions
Thomas G. Kelch
Chapter 26 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 99-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Conservation and wildlife protection treaties include international agreements which protect individual species, regulate classes of animals, protect flora and fauna regionally, and police global trade in endangered species. Some notable examples of these agreements are the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. These types of agreements, key to protecting wildlife and the environment, have had varying levels of success. There is evidence that their effectiveness may be bolstered by the inclusion of specific enforcement mechanisms.
