Cultivated meat

Abstract: Advocates of cultivated meat—also known as cultured, cell-based, and lab-grown meat—see the product as a significant part of the solution to the twin crises of climate change and the exploitation and suffering inherent in the animal agriculture industry. The cultivated meat industry has had a number of significant successes in recent years, including regulatory approval to sell cultivated meat to humans in Singapore, the United States, and Israel, and to companion animals in pet food in the EU. However, despite $3 billion of investments in the industry, by March 2024 cultivated meat for human consumption is not available for sale anywhere in the world. The industry faces many regulatory, legal, and cultural challenges, and it remains unclear whether cultivated meat will ever become the solution to climate change and animal exploitation that its supporters hope it to be.
