General counsel for animal organizations

Cynthia von Schlichten

Chapter 42 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 161-163 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: An animal nonprofit organization can encounter an endless number of challenges in its day-to-day operations, including, but certainly not limited to, employee disputes, contract disputes, intellectual property challenges, insurance and registration compliance needs, and, of course, the threat of litigation. In addition, an animal nonprofit organization may voluntarily take on legal challenges to promote its mission via advocacy litigation or public policy efforts, and these endeavours come with its own set of legal and compliance challenges. The GC serves as an organization's primary in-house counsel and is tasked with managing and overseeing all of the organization's legal and compliance challenges, as well as advising the organization's staff and Board of Directors on how to address various hurdles, from those they encounter every day to those that arise unexpectedly.
