History of animal law – 1800 to present
Thomas G. Kelch
Chapter 46 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 175-178 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Animal law has gone through an evolution. The period between 1800 and the present includes substantial changes in the focus and substance of animal law. The 19th century witnessed the dawn of animal law, largely focused on preventing cruelty to animals and protecting animals for their own sake. Laws were created to address animal experimentation and environmental concerns relating to animals. The recent modern period, after 1970, has seen the proliferation of laws that purport to be based on the science of animal welfare, signalling another shift in the motivations behind laws relating to animals.
