Insect law

Rajesh K. Reddy

Chapter 54 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 209-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: As a taxonomic class, insects currently face existential threats in the form of pesticide use, climate change, and other anthropogenic harms. They are also commodified in untold numbers across several industries. Historically overlooked in the animal protection movement, insects have managed to gain added visibility in recent years due to their role in preserving life-sustaining ecosystems and in light of mounting studies attesting to their cognitive complexity and sentience. Despite these concerns, however, only a limited number of animal protection laws contemplate their interests, with many of those that do relegating them to the margins.
